My name is Karen Hawkwood, and I was an overly inquisitive child. It all went south from there, I think!
My fascination with people seems to have arrived with me, as it goes back to my earliest memories. As the only child of a single mother in the 1970s, I had a lot of grown-up friends, and I asked the usual endless questions – only it was more along the lines of, “Why are you unhappy?” or “You and she don’t like each other much, do you?”
Needless to say, I unnerved my mom’s friends somewhat, but I learned a great deal about how people work just by watching, listening and asking questions.
I discovered astrology in high school and have been passionately absorbing and practicing it ever since. It helped frame answers to so many of those “Why” questions that I loved, and through it I learned to understand myself and others better than I ever had before. My favorite authors and teachers quickly became the ones who focused on the deep workings of the human being, especially those who brought astrology together with Jungian psychology – a combination more powerful than either approach by itself.
I’ve completed an apprenticeship with noted astrologer Steven Forrest, and in 2004 I graduated from Kepler College of Astrological Arts and Sciences in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, after a 4-year curriculum that included astrological history and practice.
In 2013 I completed Martha Beck’s Life Coach Training program, and now I combine the depth and insight of psychological astrology (which help point us to the “sore spots” in you) with the bizarrely effective coaching tools (which help us figure out how to shift the “sore spots”).

I wrote Surviving 30 after 25 years of watching people go through their Saturn Returns (and going through my own!) Without any understanding of the deeper processes at work, it can be a horrendously frightening and discouraging time for people. I have seen the difference it made for people to know it was happening, even people with no interest in astrology, and this is my way of offering that information as widely as possible so that no one has to go through it the hard way!
